Bolton Steals The Show With Hat Trick Heroics

Hoddesdon Town celebrated Halloween with another five-star afternoon at Lowfield as a Connor Bolton hat-trick helped Simon Riddle’s unbeaten league leaders overcome a stubborn NW London side 5-1 and strengthen their grip on top spot in the Thurlow Nunn First Division South.

The final scoreline suggests a comfortable afternoon, but the reality was rather different for long periods. NW London proved energetic, clever and determined opponents who made Hoddesdon work hard, particularly during a competitive first half, before the Lilywhites found another gear after the interval and eventually turned a tight contest into an emphatic victory. Bolton struck twice from the penalty spot during the opening 31 minutes and later completed his hat-trick in stoppage time, taking his remarkable tally to 19 goals in 18 appearances across all competitions. Connor Casey and Jonah Evans added the other goals, while Blue Gallagher produced another commanding midfield display to collect the Greene King Level Head Man of the Match award for the second successive game.

The result leaves Hoddesdon unbeaten after 14 league fixtures, with 12 wins and two draws yielding 38 points. Town remain top of the division, two points clear of Stansted with three games in hand, while the Lilywhites’ league goal difference has climbed to an impressive +31 after 42 goals scored and only 11 conceded.

Prior to the game, we were supported by two of our brilliant youth teams, the Under 8 Lilywhites and the Under 8 Whites, who performed mascot duties as the teams walked out for kick off. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a brilliant youth section, all under the tutelage of the likes of Victoria Capone, Sam Myers and Peter Alligan, and we thank them for their time and dedication. We also hope they enjoyed their afternoon at Lowfield and look forward to some of them perhaps playing first team football at Hoddesdon in years to come. The future is bright, the future is Lilywhite!

Hoddesdon Town Youth Under 8 Lilywhites And Under 8 Whites Performed Mascot Duties Prior To Kick Off

On a near-perfect afternoon for football, Hoddesdon wasted little time getting themselves in front. Just two minutes had been played when Harrison Cage drove into the NW London penalty area and was brought down, leaving the referee with little hesitation in pointing to the spot. Bolton stepped forward and sent his penalty towards the goalkeeper’s right. The strike was not his cleanest of the season and bobbled its way towards goal, but although the goalkeeper guessed correctly, he failed to get enough behind it and the ball squirmed through to give Town the ideal start.

Rather than opening the floodgates, however, the early goal seemed to galvanise the visitors. NW London stayed compact, competed aggressively and showed enough technical quality on the ball to ensure Hoddesdon could never simply settle into a comfortable rhythm. Town remained the better side during the next half hour, with Gallagher increasingly influential in the middle of the pitch and Jack Gibbs offering his usual composure. Cage and Jonah Evans pushed high from the wider positions whenever the opportunity presented itself, but NW London defended with grit and made Hoddesdon earn every opening.

The second arrived on 31 minutes and once again came from the penalty spot, although the build-up owed much to some excellent work from Casey. The striker found room inside the area and attempted to cut a dangerous ball across goal, only for a defender to block it with an arm. Bolton again accepted responsibility and this time made absolutely no mistake, converting his second penalty of the afternoon to double the advantage. With two goals already to his name before the interval, thoughts naturally began to turn towards a possible hat-trick.

Cage almost added a third ten minutes later when he connected sweetly with a volley, but his effort flashed narrowly wide of the post. Bolton then had a glorious chance to complete his treble on 44 minutes when he broke through on goal, only for his finish to drift wide as NW London survived.

Harrison Cage Had A Brilliant Game

The visitors finished the half strongly and gave Hoddesdon their clearest warning yet in stoppage time. A dangerous attack developed inside the Town penalty area and, with Liam Nugent beaten during the scramble, Blesson Asekolenga somehow managed to clear the ball from the goal line to preserve the two-goal advantage. That intervention proved particularly valuable because NW London emerged after the break with renewed belief. Barely a minute into the second half, the visitors forced another crowded goalmouth situation and this time the ball found its way over the line to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The scorer could not immediately be confirmed, with NW London’s team details not yet available through the usual channels, but the identity mattered rather less than the effect the goal had on the contest. Hoddesdon had been given a sharp reminder that the game was far from finished and suddenly Lowfield was watching a much tighter affair.

Riddle’s side responded impressively. Rather than becoming anxious, Town raised the tempo, pushed their wing-backs higher and began moving the ball with considerably greater purpose through Gallagher and Gibbs. Evans came agonisingly close to restoring the two-goal cushion on 55 minutes when he was played through into a promising position. His effort beat the goalkeeper but crashed against the crossbar, providing another example of the attacking threat the marauding defender has brought to the side throughout the campaign.

Two minutes later the third finally arrived, and it was arguably the goal of the afternoon. Cage burst down the flank and delivered a superb cross into the area, where Casey met it with a beautifully controlled volley that flew beyond the goalkeeper. It was an excellent finish from the striker and a hugely important one for Hoddesdon. NW London’s early second-half goal had briefly threatened to change the mood of the afternoon, but Casey’s strike restored the breathing space and allowed Town to take control once again.

Connor Casey Deservedly Grabbed A Goal During Another Impressive Afternoon For The Forward

The fourth followed just five minutes later. Bolton stood over a free-kick on the right and delivered into the danger area, with NW London only able to partially clear the initial ball. Evans reacted quickest on the edge of the box, collecting possession before drilling a low finish through the crowd and into the net. It was another goal for a player whose attacking contribution continues to grow, and his willingness to surge forward from wing-back has become an increasingly important feature of Hoddesdon’s play.

Jonah Evans Cannot Stop Scoring!

At 4-1 the game finally began to open up, with NW London unable to maintain the intensity that had caused problems during the opening hour. Hoddesdon moved possession confidently, Gallagher continued to dictate proceedings in midfield and the visitors increasingly found themselves chasing shadows as Town looked for further opportunities. Gallagher’s influence was particularly impressive because it came without the headline numbers enjoyed by Bolton. The midfielder constantly demanded the ball, changed the direction of attacks and drove Hoddesdon forward, producing another display of authority only a week after winning the same Man of the Match award against Allenburys Sports.

Blue Grabbed Another Man Of The Match Award

That consistency has made Gallagher one of the first names on Riddle’s team sheet this season. Even on an afternoon when Bolton scored three goals, the midfielder was still adjudged the outstanding performer, underlining just how complete his display had been.

The substitutions began to arrive as Hoddesdon looked to maintain their intensity. Ollie Babbage replaced Casey shortly after the fourth goal, Oliver Finch came on for Cage, Reggie Pegrum replaced Harry Andic and Brandon Oxley-Fricker entered for Jimmy Agnew during the closing stages. Babbage almost added another late in the game when he fired over the crossbar on 87 minutes, but Hoddesdon did not have to wait much longer for the fifth. Deep into stoppage time, Gallagher capped his performance with a perfectly weighted cross towards Bolton in front of goal.

Bolton Completed His Hat Trick In The 92nd Minute

There will not be many easier opportunities for the striker to complete a hat-trick. Bolton planted a routine header beyond the goalkeeper from close range, claimed the match ball and took his season total to an extraordinary 19 goals from 18 appearances in all competitions. The goal also moved Bolton into second place in the First Division South scoring charts, behind only May & Baker’s Addae Paponette, who reached 21 goals during his side’s 6-1 victory over Dunmow Town. Bolton’s return remains exceptional, however, and his combination of consistency and ruthlessness continues to provide Hoddesdon with one of the division’s most dangerous attacking weapons.

Bolton Is 2nd In The Hunt For The Golden Boot

NW London restarted the game following the fifth goal, but there was barely time for another touch before the referee brought proceedings to an end. Hoddesdon had eventually secured a convincing 5-1 victory, although their opponents deserved credit for making the afternoon significantly more difficult than the final margin might suggest.

Manager Simon Riddle was particularly pleased with the way his side reacted after being tested either side of half-time.

“NW London made us work, which I expected them to do, and I thought they were better than the scoreline will probably suggest,” said Riddle. “They were clever in possession, they competed properly and when they got back to 2-1 they gave us a real test. What pleased me was the response from our players because we didn’t panic; we increased the tempo, started moving them around and then produced two very good goals in quick succession.”

Riddle also praised the attacking contribution throughout the side, with Bolton’s hat-trick naturally taking centre stage but Casey, Evans and Gallagher all earning special mention.

“Connor Bolton will rightly get headlines because scoring three goals at any level is a great afternoon, but there was quality everywhere,” he added. “Connor Casey’s finish was excellent, Jonah keeps arriving in dangerous areas and Blue ran the middle of the pitch for long periods. When you have that many players affecting the game in different ways it makes us difficult to defend against, and that was probably the biggest positive for me today.”

Chairman Stuart Varney was equally delighted with another strong Lowfield performance and felt Gallagher’s second successive Greene King award was fully deserved.

“It says quite a lot about Blue’s performance that Connor Bolton scores a hat-trick and Blue still walks away with Man of the Match,” said Varney. “He seems to be everywhere at the moment. He gets us playing, he wins the ball back, he carries it forward and he is constantly looking for the next positive pass, so his consistency has been outstanding.”

Varney also highlighted the growing excitement around a side that continues to set the pace in the division.

“The supporters are enjoying watching this team because there is always attacking intent,” he continued. “We scored five today, we’ve got defenders getting forward and scoring, players coming off the bench making an impact and a striker in outstanding form. There is a long way to go, but it is exciting to see the club at the top of the table and playing football with this much confidence.”

Elsewhere in the division, Hoddesdon’s nearest challengers Stansted kept up the pressure with a 1-0 home victory over Athletic Newham, moving onto 36 points from 17 games. Town therefore remain two points clear while holding three matches in hand, a position that further emphasises the strength of their unbeaten league campaign. May & Baker also enjoyed a big afternoon, beating Dunmow Town 6-1 to move onto 28 points from 13 matches, while Rayleigh Town strengthened their position in the leading group with a 4-1 victory over Burnham Ramblers. AS London edged London Fennecs 3-2, Coggeshall Town won a remarkable nine-goal contest 5-4 at Marcelona and FC Baresi collected three points with a 2-1 success at Basildon Town.

Saturday's Results

One of the more significant results came at Southend Manor, where the hosts defeated East Thurrock Community 2-1. That result leaves East Thurrock on 30 points from 16 matches and creates further breathing space between Hoddesdon and another of the teams who had spent much of the early season around the leading positions.

Enfield Borough were the day’s other big scorers, beating Brimsdown 7-3. Hoddesdon therefore finish the weekend top on 38 points, Stansted sit second on 36, East Thurrock remain third on 30, Rayleigh have 29 and May & Baker 28, although the differing number of matches played throughout the division means there remains plenty of movement still to come.

The Full Extended League Table

League matters now take a temporary back seat for the Lilywhites. On Tuesday evening Hoddesdon travel to Haverhill Rovers in the League Challenge Cup, giving Riddle’s side another opportunity to continue their progress in knockout competition before returning to the battle at the top of the First Division South. For now, however, another unbeaten league afternoon can be added to a rapidly growing collection. Five goals, another Blue Gallagher masterclass, Jonah Evans continuing his attacking surge and Connor Bolton leaving Lowfield with the match ball ensured Halloween ended as another memorable one for the Lilywhites.
