Hoddesdon Town’s remarkable start to the new season continued on Saturday as Connor Bolton’s first-half penalty proved enough to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory away to Marcelona and keep Simon Riddle’s Lilywhites at the summit of the Thurlow Nunn League First Division South. There were no six-goal fireworks this time and no stoppage-time thunderbolt, but perhaps this was the clearest demonstration yet that Hoddesdon have developed the ability to win in different ways.

After the free-scoring victories over NW London and East Thurrock Community and the dramatic late success against FC Baresi, this was an afternoon built around discipline, concentration and defensive strength. Bolton supplied the decisive moment from the penalty spot after 22 minutes, while captain Jack Gibbs produced a commanding display at the other end to earn the Star Player award and help Liam Nugent record another clean sheet. Club President Roger Merton made the journey to Burnham-on-Crouch and kindly supplied the detailed match notes used in this report, with Hoddesdon facing their longest league trip of the season so far at around an hour and a half. There will be a sense of familiarity with Leslie Fields soon enough, as Town are due to make the journey back in a couple of weeks to face Marcelona’s landlords, Burnham Ramblers.

Hoddesdon Claimed All Three Points On Saturday

Marcelona arrived with an energetic young side and had proved difficult to beat in league competition, but Hoddesdon made the brighter start. Five minutes in, an early scramble inside the home penalty area almost produced the opener, with the ball eventually being cleared from the goal-line as Town immediately asked questions of the Marcelona defence. The hosts began to settle after ten minutes and their main threat came through captain Kamarni Collington, whose pace and directness had been highlighted before the match. Marcelona repeatedly looked for the longer pass forward in an attempt to turn Hoddesdon’s defence, but Gibbs, Jack Orchard and Blesson Asekolenga dealt impressively with the aerial challenge while Harrison Cage and Hadley Richards worked tirelessly in the wider areas.

At the other end, Cage tested the goalkeeper after 20 minutes with a strike from outside the box, but the effort was comfortably gathered. It was another indication that Hoddesdon were beginning to exert control, and two minutes later their pressure finally brought its reward.Bolton collected possession inside the area, beat his man and was then brought down, leaving the referee with little hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Having won the kick himself, Bolton immediately took responsibility and calmly converted to put Hoddesdon 1-0 ahead, continuing his excellent individual start to the campaign.

Connor Bolton Kept His Nerve To Score From The Spot

“I knew as soon as it was given that I wanted it,” said Bolton afterwards. “You try to block everything else out, pick your spot and commit to it, and thankfully it went in. In a game that tight you know one moment can decide it, so it was important to stay calm.”

Hoddesdon very nearly doubled the advantage within two minutes. Blue Gallagher stood over a free-kick just outside the penalty area on the left and curled an excellent effort beyond the goalkeeper, only for the crossbar to intervene and deny Town a spectacular second. Riddle’s side continued to enjoy the better of proceedings as the half developed, with Marcelona finding it difficult to turn their longer spells of possession into meaningful opportunities. Nugent was called upon to deal with occasional efforts from distance, but Hoddesdon’s defensive structure restricted the home side to speculative attempts rather than clear openings.

Another excellent opportunity arrived after 33 minutes when Richards advanced down the left and delivered into the area. Freddie Wilkinson met the cross with an inventive flick but could only guide the ball narrowly over the bar, leaving Hoddesdon’s advantage at a single goal as the teams headed towards the interval. The 1-0 half-time scoreline did not fully reflect Town’s territorial advantage, but it left the match delicately poised. Marcelona remained very much alive in the contest and, with their young side possessing plenty of speed, Hoddesdon knew the second period would demand concentration every bit as much as attacking ambition.

The pattern continued after the restart, with the home side looking to bypass midfield through direct balls while Hoddesdon remained composed in dealing with them. Gibbs was particularly impressive, repeatedly winning headers and stepping forward when required to tidy up danger with his feet, setting the tone for another resilient defensive performance. Babbage, rewarded with a start following his dramatic winning goal against Baresi, almost helped create the crucial second after 59 minutes. The forward drove impressively down the left before finding Bolton, whose shot was saved by the Marcelona goalkeeper to keep the hosts within touching distance.

Two further Hoddesdon attacks produced successive corners around the 65-minute mark as Riddle’s side continued searching for the cushion that would have made the closing stages considerably more comfortable. Marcelona, however, refused to fold and continued competing aggressively, with a growing number of fouls eventually resulting in the referee reaching for his yellow card. Riddle turned to his bench after 73 minutes, with Connor Casey replacing goalscorer Bolton and Reggie Pegrum taking the place of Maurice Abana. Ollie Finch was then introduced for Babbage with ten minutes remaining as Hoddesdon freshened the side for the final push and attempted to protect their slender advantage without surrendering their attacking threat.

What followed was perhaps the most satisfying element of the afternoon for the Hoddesdon manager. Marcelona pushed forward looking for an equaliser, but the Lilywhites refused to panic and continued meeting every direct ball with the same determination they had shown from the opening whistle. Nugent dealt confidently with anything that escaped the defensive line, although the goalkeeper was rarely forced into anything beyond routine saves from distance. In front of him, Gibbs remained outstanding both in the air and on the ground, producing the sort of captain’s performance that fully justified his selection as Man of the Match.

“It was one of those games where you have to enjoy defending,” said Riddle. “Marcelona have some quick, talented players and they kept asking questions, particularly with the amount of longer balls they played, but Jack led the back line superbly and everybody around him stayed disciplined. We would obviously have liked a second goal because it makes the afternoon easier, but sometimes you have to protect what you have earned,” he continued. “The players showed maturity and concentration, and keeping another clean sheet away from home is something we can take a lot of satisfaction from.”

The final whistle therefore brought another valuable three points and perhaps one of the loudest statements yet about the character of this Hoddesdon side. They were not at their free-flowing attacking best and did not need to be, because the early penalty and a determined defensive effort were enough to complete the job.

The victory moves Town onto 13 points from their opening five league matches, with four victories and one draw, 13 goals scored and only three conceded. Hoddesdon remain top, one point ahead of May & Baker EC, while Lymore Gardens sit third on ten points as the first shape of the promotion battle begins to emerge. That makes the contrast with twelve months ago particularly striking. Last season Hoddesdon endured a miserable opening sequence, failing to win any of their first eight league matches and finding themselves rooted to the bottom end of the table, whereas this campaign has begun with five games unbeaten and the Lilywhites looking down on everybody else.

Riddle's Men Sit Top Of The League

Riddle is understandably delighted by that transformation but has no interest in allowing his players to become distracted by the standings this early in the season. The message remains one of enjoying the momentum while recognising that the work which created it must continue.

“We can be pleased because 13 points from five games is an excellent return, particularly with four of those matches away from home,” said Riddle. “But the table in August does not win you anything, so the challenge is to keep showing the same hunger, keep improving and see where that takes us.”

The Gaffer Is Firmly Keeping His Feet On The Floor

For Bolton, the afternoon provided another significant contribution in a season in which he has agaib emerged as one of Town’s major attacking influences. His penalty was the only goal at Leslie Fields, but it was enough to send Hoddesdon back down the long road from Burnham-on-Crouch with another three points safely secured.

“We have got a really good feeling in the group at the moment,” added Bolton. “We know we can score goals, but today showed we can grind one out as well, and those are massive wins over the course of a season. Being top is brilliant, but nobody wants to stop here.”

Five played. Four won. One drawn. Still unbeaten, and still top of the league.
