NUGENT MUZZLES THE CANNONS AS HODDY OPEN WITH A POINT

Hoddesdon Town began their 2026/27 Thurlow Nunn League First Division South campaign with a hard-earned point and a clean sheet after a goalless draw away to Cannons Wood at Parkside Stadium, the home of Aveley FC. On a bright and hot afternoon in South Ockendon, Simon Riddle’s side worked for virtually 100 minutes, survived two enormous scares in added time and left with something tangible from a contest that was competitive throughout, even if it rarely developed into a classic.

The result placed Hoddesdon tenth in the first league table of the new season, level on one point with Cannons Wood, Rayleigh Town and Marcelona after each opened with a draw. With several clubs still awaiting their first fixture and the early leaders separated mainly by opening-day goal difference, the table has little long-term significance, but getting off the mark away from home gives the Lilywhites a sound platform.

Hoddesdon lined up with Liam Nugent in goal behind Jason Brown, Jimmy Agnew, captain Jack Gibbs and Jonah Evans. Blue Gallagher, Maurice Abana and Blesson Asekolenga supplied the midfield strength, with Connor Bolton, Harrison Cage and Freddie Wilkinson offering the attacking threat against opponents carrying plenty of speed in wide areas.

Cannons Wood’s wingers Kamara and Adejokun were identified as two of the hosts’ biggest dangers, and their pace tested Hoddesdon’s concentration from the opening exchanges. The visitors nevertheless settled reasonably well and produced the first noteworthy moment after only three minutes, when Brown advanced from the right, cut inside and forced the goalkeeper into a save. That early effort hinted at an open game, although the contest soon became scrappy and congested in midfield. Hoddesdon’s shape was generally sound, although Wilkinson and Gallagher were both cautioned during a combative first half. The hosts’ best opportunity of the opening period arrived in the 43rd minute, but the effort went wide and Nugent’s goal remained intact. Hoddesdon had moments of encouragement without finding the final pass or finish required, and the sides went in at half-time level at 0–0.

The defining incident came just three minutes after the restart. Cannons Wood were reduced to ten men when Palvy Manduakila was shown a straight red card for a heavy challenge, a decision that appeared to hand Hoddesdon a significant opportunity to seize control. The game did not follow the straightforward pattern that might have been expected. Hoddesdon looked to use the extra player, but Cannons Wood reorganised, worked with determination and continued to threaten on the counterattack, while the visitors struggled to stretch the reduced home side or create the clear opening that could have settled the contest.

Manduakila Saw Red For The Hosts

Riddle made his first change in the 55th minute, sending Connor Casey on for Brown as Hoddesdon searched for fresh energy. Reggie Pegrum later replaced Cage, while Ollie Finch and Brandon Fricker were introduced for Bolton and Wilkinson during the closing stages as the heat and workload began to take their toll. Asekolenga and Casey also collected second-half cautions, but Hoddesdon remained resolute and avoided allowing the fractured nature of the contest to pull them out of position. The frustration was that, despite having the numerical advantage for almost the entire second half, the Lilywhites could not turn their greater numbers into sustained pressure or a decisive chance. Instead, Cannons Wood finished the stronger. From around the 80th minute the ten men began to gain territory and ask the more urgent questions, forcing Hoddesdon deeper and turning a possible opportunity to chase all three points into a stern examination of the visitors’ defensive nerve.

That examination became most severe deep into a lengthy period of stoppage time. In the 97th minute, a Cannons Wood forward broke clean through with the chance to win the match, but Nugent stood tall and produced a superb save to preserve the clean sheet. There was still one final act of resistance to come. Two minutes later, a home effort appeared to be heading towards goal until Gibbs threw himself in the way and made a vital block, ensuring Hoddesdon’s opening-day point survived the last major scare of a game that had extended well beyond 90 minutes. The final whistle confirmed a 0–0 draw and a deserved clean sheet for a Hoddesdon side that had shown character, organisation and a willingness to fight through difficult periods. There will be frustration that the dismissal was not exploited more effectively, but opening fixtures can be awkward and an away point against a capable side is far from a negative beginning.

Jack Gibbs Was A Rock

Manager Simon Riddle acknowledged both sides of the afternoon, praising the resilience while admitting the team could have made more of its numerical advantage.

“It is a point away from home on the opening day and the clean sheet is a big positive, because the lads worked extremely hard in difficult conditions,” said Riddle. “Once they went down to ten we would have liked to control the game better and create more, but Cannons Wood defended well and still carried a threat, so in the end we had to show another side of ourselves.”

Riddle was particularly pleased by the determination shown during the late spell of home pressure.

“Liam has made a massive save and Jack has produced a huge block right at the end, and those moments are just as important as scoring at the other end,” he added. “There are things to improve, especially with the ball and when playing against ten men, but we have started with a point, a clean sheet and a performance that showed plenty of commitment.”

Nugent’s contribution earned him the man of the match award, and it was difficult to argue with the decision after his crucial intervention in added time. The goalkeeper had been well protected for long periods, but when the defining moment arrived he remained composed and made the save Hoddesdon desperately needed.

“The clean sheet belongs to everyone because the lads in front of me defended brilliantly and kept working right until the end,” Nugent said. “When their player went through late on, my only thought was to stay big for as long as possible and make him beat me, and thankfully I managed to get the save in.”

He was also quick to recognise Gibbs’ intervention and the collective spirit behind the result.

“Jack’s block after that was every bit as important, and it showed how determined we were to come away with something,” Nugent added. “We know we could have used the extra man better, but an away point and a clean sheet is something to build on.”

Vice-chairman Roger Merton summed up the afternoon as one in which Hoddesdon “fought hard for 100 minutes” against a good Cannons Wood team. His notes reflected a match that failed to sparkle as an attacking spectacle but still demanded concentration, stamina and courage, particularly when the hosts gathered momentum despite being a player short.

The opening table shows Hoddesdon sitting tenth, immediately below ninth-placed Cannons Wood, with both clubs having played one, drawn one and recorded a neutral goal difference. London Harts United lead after a seven-goal opening victory, while May & Baker EC and Athletic Newham also made emphatic starts, but the key fact for Hoddesdon is that their campaign is underway with a point already secured. Riddle and his players will know that sharper possession and greater creativity will be required as the season develops, particularly when circumstances provide such a clear numerical advantage. Yet resilience, defensive commitment and a goalkeeper capable of delivering in the decisive moment are valuable foundations, and Hoddesdon displayed all three qualities at Parkside Stadium.

The afternoon ended without a goal, but not without value. Nugent’s save, Gibbs’ block and the collective refusal to buckle ensured Hoddesdon returned from South Ockendon unbeaten, with a clean sheet and the first point of the new season safely on the board.
