CRYMORE GARDENS

Late Fireworks At Lowfield As Eden and Bolton Seal The Deal

Hoddesdon Town produced a powerful second-half display under the Lowfield lights to avenge their heavy defeat earlier in the season, beating playoff-chasing Lymore Gardens 2-0 in a game that burst into life in the closing stages.

The hosts came into the match determined to make amends for the 5-1 reverse suffered on the opening day of the campaign — a result that felt a long time ago judging by recent form. Hoddesdon started the night third in the form table after an impressive run of results, despite Saturday’s setback against high-flying Rayleigh Town, while Lymore arrived looking to bounce back from a 3-0 loss to Burnham and keep their playoff hopes alive.

There was a noticeably different feel about the Hoddesdon side compared to that opening-day defeat, with only two players remaining from the starting line-up that night. The changes showed, as from the first whistle the home side looked sharper, more confident, and determined to control the game.

Bright start but no breakthrough

Hoddesdon dominated the opening exchanges, enjoying the lion’s share of possession in the first ten minutes and pinning the visitors back inside their own half. A couple of scrambles in the Lymore penalty area hinted that the breakthrough might come early, but the final touch just wouldn’t fall. On 17 minutes came the best move of the half. Bailey Eden produced a sensational ball down the wing that split the defence and sent Freddie Wilkinson racing clear, but with the goal at his mercy the striker delayed his shot just long enough for the covering defender to recover and snuff out the chance.

A minute later Hoddesdon went close again. Connor Bolton whipped in a wicked, teasing cross to the back post, finding Blue Gallagher in space eight yards out, but the effort flew well over the bar. Hoddesdon could sense that the visitors were vulnerable, but the goal refused to come. Lymore’s first effort didn’t arrive until the 27th minute, a hopeful half-volley from distance that sailed comfortably wide of Nugent’s goal, summing up a first half in which the visitors struggled to get out of their own half.

Despite dominating possession, Hoddesdon found it difficult to break down a stubborn Lymore defence as the tempo dipped towards the interval. The hosts kept the ball well and looked composed, but lacked the decisive pass in the final third, while Lymore offered little going forward and seemed content to sit deep and frustrate. At the break it remained goalless, and it was hard to argue that the neutral would have been entertained. Hoddesdon had controlled the game but without reward, while Lymore had barely threatened. The feeling around Lowfield was clear — the match was there to be won if the Lilywhites could find another gear.

Frustration after the break

The second half began with renewed urgency from Hoddesdon, and on 52 minutes Blue Gallagher thought he was through on goal before going to ground under pressure. Loud appeals for a shirt pull were waved away by the referee, much to the frustration of the home crowd, who felt the midfield maestro had been denied a clear chance.

The tension grew as the minutes ticked by, and on 69 minutes the match produced its first major flashpoint. Hoddesdon forced the ball into the net after a goalmouth scramble, with Blesson Asekolenga appearing to apply the finishing touch, but furious protests from the visitors led to the referee consulting his assistant. After a short discussion the goal was disallowed, leaving players and supporters alike scratching their heads as to what the offence could possibly have been. There didnt appear to be an offisde or a foul and there certainly wasn't a flag from the referee's assistant to indicate an infringement. It was only when the Lymore players demanded the ref go and speak to his colleague, that a conversation ensued. Bizzare.

Rather than knocking the wind out of them, the decision seemed to ignite Hoddesdon.

Just three minutes later the breakthrough finally arrived. Gallagher was released through the middle and saw his shot parried by the keeper, but Bailey Eden reacted quickest, racing onto the loose ball and smashing it home from close range to send Lowfield into celebration. It was a goal that had been coming, and suddenly the whole mood of the game changed. Eden deserved the plaudits for such a dominant display on the ball and the home faithful were delighted he had his reward.

1-0

Moments later tempers flared when Bolton was caught high with a boot to the torso in a heavy challenge that left the home bench furious, but again the referee waved play on, adding to the growing sense of injustice among the Hoddesdon players. The stud marks on display in the dressing room afterwards only served to underline what an awful challenge it was, and to see it go unpunished was another bitter pill to swallow. Credit to Bolton for carrying on when he was clearly in a lot of pain. Instead of losing focus, Bolton picked himself up off of the floor and responded in the best possible way.

On 83 minutes he produced superb work down the left, beating his man before cutting the ball back perfectly for Gallagher, whose powerful effort from ten yards clipped the crossbar and flew over. It was a sign that Hoddesdon were now in complete control and pushing hard to kill the game.

Bolton seals it in style

The points were finally secured in the 90th minute, and it came from a moment of real quality. Gallagher delivered a teasing free kick into the penalty area from a wide left position, and Connor Bolton rose superbly to nod the ball across the keeper and into the far corner to make it 2-0. It was a goal that summed up Hoddesdon’s second-half performance — full of belief, energy, and attacking intent and underlined their attitude to keep going when things were seemingly going against them. It also took Bolton's tally for the season to 17 in all competitons and at this point, you can't see anyone challenging him for the Golden Boot award.

2-0

The final whistle brought warm applause from the Lowfield crowd after a performance that grew stronger as the night went on. For long periods Hoddesdon had dominated without reward, but once the breakthrough came they never looked back, finishing the match with the kind of confidence that has lifted them up the table in recent months.

Bailey Eden deservedly took the Greene King 'Level Head' Man of the Match award after a tireless display full of running, creativity and attacking threat, but in truth every player in white and black played their part — especially in a second half that showed exactly why Hoddesdon remain firmly in the playoff hunt.

Most importantly, the victory provided perfect revenge for the opening-day defeat to Lymore Gardens and keeps the momentum going at exactly the right time of the season. On this evidence, Hoddesdon Town are a very different side to the one beaten back in August — and if they continue to play like this, the teams above them will be looking over their shoulders.

Plenty of football to come and so much to play for as we head for the home stretch.
