There was drama, missed chances, a red card and a decisive double from Hoddesdon marksman Bolton as Hoddesdon Town powered past Southend Manor 2–0 in an entertaining Saturday afternoon encounter.
From the very first whistle there was an edge to the contest, and by the final moments the home support had plenty to cheer about after seeing their side secure a deserved victory that owed much to Bolton’s persistence and the commanding performance of man-of-the-match Jonah Evans.
But it was far from straightforward.
Bright Start and Early Warning
Hoddesdon burst out of the traps looking determined to impose themselves early, pushing Southend Manor back and forcing the visitors to defend deep inside the opening exchanges.
Just five minutes in, Bolton nearly got the afternoon off to a perfect start. A slick move in midfield opened up space for the striker, who drove a low effort towards goal. The Southend keeper reacted sharply, diving down to his right to keep the shot out and spare his side an early setback.
The early warning shot set the tone for the first half hour as Hoddesdon dominated territory and possession, probing for gaps in a stubborn Manor defence.
Penalty Drama
The match exploded into life in the 16th minute when Hoddesdon were awarded a penalty.
Up stepped Bolton, clearly eager to make amends for his earlier near miss.
The striker placed the ball confidently on the spot and took a long breath before striking it — but the Southend keeper guessed right. Diving low, he produced a superb save to parry the penalty away and silence the home fans who had already begun celebrating.
For a moment, it felt like the turning point of the game.
Instant Redemption
But Bolton didn’t have to wait long to make amends.
Barely a minute later Hoddesdon took a corner from the saved penalty effort. The delivery curled dangerously into the six-yard box where Bolton rose highest amid a crowd of bodies.
The ball ricocheted around before dropping kindly for the striker, who reacted quickest to smash it home from close range.
1–0 Hoddesdon.
The ground erupted as Bolton wheeled away in celebration, arms aloft, having turned penalty disappointment into instant redemption.
Town in Control
With the lead secured, Hoddesdon continued to press forward looking to extend their advantage before the break.
In the 26th minute Bailey Eden came agonisingly close to doubling the lead. Picking up the ball on the edge of the box, he shifted it onto his right foot and unleashed a powerful drive that whistled just inches over the crossbar.
The effort had the Southend goalkeeper beaten, but not the woodwork behind him.
Southend Manor tried to respond with quick counter-attacks, but the Hoddesdon defence stood firm, marshalled expertly by a tireless Jonah Evans who was everywhere — breaking up play, winning headers and driving his side forward.
Halftime: Hoddesdon Town 1–0 Southend Manor
At the interval the hosts held a narrow but deserved lead, though the match still felt finely balanced.
Southend had shown flashes on the break and remained very much in the contest.
But the second half would soon tip the scales decisively.
Flashpoint After the Break
Just five minutes after the restart the game took a dramatic turn.
A high ball dropped in midfield and as players challenged for possession a Southend Manor player launched into a high boot challenge. The referee immediately halted play and produced a straight red card.
The visitors were down to ten men.
The dismissal sparked protests from the Southend bench, but the decision stood — and suddenly Hoddesdon had both the lead and the numerical advantage.
Town Turn the Screw
Sensing an opportunity to kill the game off, Hoddesdon began to dominate possession even more aggressively.
Wave after wave of attacks poured forward as the home side looked to make their advantage count.
In the 60th minute they came heartbreakingly close to doing exactly that.
Blue found himself taking a penalty on the left side of the penalty area and shot from a tight angle. His shot flew past the keeper but crashed off the outside of the post and bounced back out to Blue before Southend managed to clear.
Groans echoed around the ground as fans realised how close it had come.
Bolton Strikes Again
Fortunately for Hoddesdon, the second goal wasn’t far away.
Four minutes later Gallagher produced a moment of magic down the flank. Collecting the ball deep in his own half, he surged forward on a dazzling run that left two Southend defenders trailing in his wake.
Reaching the byline, Gallagher delivered a perfect cross into the danger area.
Bolton was waiting.
BOOM...
2–0 Hoddesdon.
The home supporters celebrated wildly as Bolton grabbed his second of the afternoon and effectively put the game beyond reach.
Evans Pulling the Strings
While Bolton took the headlines with his brace, the heartbeat of Hoddesdon’s performance was unquestionably Jonah Evans.
Operating across midfield and defence, Evans dominated aerial battles, intercepted passes and repeatedly launched attacks with calm distribution.
Time and again he broke up Southend’s attempts to mount a comeback, earning appreciative applause from the stands.
It was the sort of all-action display that keeps a team ticking — and it didn’t go unnoticed when the man-of-the-match award was later announced.
Late Chances
With the result looking secure, Hoddesdon continued to create opportunities in the closing stages.
In the 87th minute Coltman nearly added a third goal to cap the performance. Picking up the ball just outside the box, he took a quick touch before curling a shot towards the far corner.
The effort drifted just wide, skimming past the post with the keeper rooted to the spot.
It would have been the perfect finishing touch, but Hoddesdon supporters were hardly complaining.
Professional Finish
As the clock ticked into the final minutes, the hosts comfortably saw the game out. Southend Manor, despite their efforts, struggled to create clear chances with ten men and rarely troubled the Hoddesdon back line.
When the final whistle blew, it confirmed a solid and professional 2–0 victory for the home side.
Full Time: Hoddesdon Town 2–0 Southend Manor
It was a result built on resilience, attacking intent and a clinical performance from Bolton, who proved decisive despite his earlier penalty miss.
The striker’s brace will grab the headlines, but the afternoon also belonged to Jonah Evans, whose tireless display earned him a well-deserved man-of-the-match award.
The Verdict
In the end it was a deserved win for Hoddesdon Town, who combined attacking flair with defensive discipline to claim all three points.
Southend Manor battled hard but the red card and Bolton’s sharp finishing ultimately proved too much to overcome.
For Hoddesdon, it was a satisfying afternoon’s work — and one that keeps momentum firmly on their side as the season continues.
And for Bolton, after that early penalty miss, it was the perfect reminder that persistence pays off.
