It was a clash between the league’s two form sides on Saturday at Lowfield, with Rayleigh Town the visitors. Expectations were high from both sets of supporters, and they were treated to a well contested encounter in the early spring sunshine. In the end, Rayleigh extended their impressive run, with an early goal proving enough to secure them a 1–0 win despite some strong Hoddesdon Town pressure.
Hoddesdon made two changes to the team that beat AS London midweek, with Freddie Wilkinson and Bailey Eden returning to the starting lineup. Eden was first to test the Rayleigh keeper, driving in with a tight angle shot on four minutes that was palmed into the path of Connor Bolton, who lifted his follow up over the bar. Hoddesdon looked the brighter side in the early exchanges, but on nine minutes Rayleigh took their chance. A clearance was won back and delivered into the box, where Dylan Jones ghosted between two defenders and drilled a low effort past Liam Nugent. 0–1.
Hoddesdon heads didn’t drop, and the pressure continued. On 23 minutes, Bolton threaded a pass to Blue Gallagher, whose low shot across goal went narrowly wide of the far post. Corners and free kicks from Gallagher, Richards and Eden were consistently dangerous, but the ball just wouldn’t fall kindly for that decisive touch. The final chance of the half again fell to Eden after excellent link up play from Wilkinson, but the Rayleigh keeper reacted sharply, and the resulting corner was scrambled clear.
Both sides emerged knowing the game was still finely balanced, and the intensity carried into the second half. The play grew increasingly fragmented, punctuated by a series of needless bookings. Rayleigh’s number six, Cameron Sutherland, was cautioned on 46 minutes after clattering into Wilkinson on halfway. Moments later, Gallagher went close again, firing just wide as Hoddesdon pushed for the equaliser.
Substitutes Connor Casey and Max Coltman injected fresh urgency for the home side. On 79 minutes, Sutherland was penalised for a foul throw and, in frustration, kicked the ball away, earning a second yellow and an early bath. It felt a little harsh in the context, but it handed Hoddesdon fresh momentum. A triple change followed, with Asekolenga, Harvey and central defender Jack Riddle (interestingly deployed up top), entering the fray. The plan was clear: get the ball forward at every opportunity and force the equaliser.
The pressure mounted, but it was to be one of those days. There were groans around Lowfield as efforts from the outstanding Jack Orchard and Jimmy Agnew went agonisingly wide when it looked certain the net would bulge. Hoddesdon fans will feel it had the hallmarks of a smash and grab, but Rayleigh defended doggedly, limited the clear cut openings, and were clinical when their moment arrived.
Hoddesdon now have a chance to bounce back quickly, with a home fixture under the Lowfield lights on Tuesday. Lymore Gardens are the visitors, and Hoddesdon will be eager to banish memories of July’s opening day 5–1 defeat. Come join us for that one!
MotM: Some solid efforts from the lads today but the Greene King Man of the Match went to Jimmy Agnew who is in excellent form with surgical tackling and full commitment to the cause.
