GOOD FRIDAY? NOPE

GOOD FRIDAY? NOPE

Lilywhites Hit For Four In Easter Away Day Massacre

Hoddesdon Town’s recent love affair with late drama came crashing to an abrupt and bruising halt on Friday night, as Cannons Wood turned the tables and delivered an early hammer blow that left the visitors chasing shadows for the remainder of the evening. After three consecutive victories snatched in the dying embers, this time it was Hoddy on the receiving end of a ruthless, front-loaded performance — two goals inside twelve minutes setting the tone for a long night under the lights.

FAST START FLOORS HODDY

There was a sense of confidence travelling with the Hoddesdon contingent. Momentum had been building, belief growing, and the squad had shown resilience in abundance in recent weeks. But football has a funny way of restoring balance — and Cannons Wood wasted no time in doing exactly that. Inside ten minutes, the warning signs were already flashing. Cannons Wood forced three consecutive corners, each one cranking up the pressure on the Hoddesdon defence. The third proved decisive. A well-delivered ball into the box found Lapington, who rose highest to power home a header and give the hosts a deserved early lead.

Before Hoddesdon could regroup, the damage was doubled.

Just two minutes later, Cannons Wood struck again. Balisani capitalised on the shaken visitors, finishing clinically to make it 2–0. In the blink of an eye, the script had flipped completely — from recent late heroics to early despair.

RESPONSE WITHOUT REWARD

To their credit, Hoddesdon did not fold. From around the 20-minute mark through to the interval, the visitors began to wrestle back some control. The midfield started to find a rhythm, Bailey Eden leading by example with tireless running and relentless energy. Connor Bolton and Blue Gallagher looked to stretch the play, while Freddie Wilkinson searched for openings in and around the box.

There were glimpses — half-chances, dangerous positions, promising passages of play — but Cannons Wood’s defensive unit stood firm. Every cross seemed to find a head in black and white, every through ball was met by a timely interception. Despite their improved play, Hoddesdon couldn’t find a way through. At the break, it remained 2–0 — a scoreline that reflected Cannons Wood’s clinical start rather than the balance of play as the half wore on.

SECOND HALF BLOW

If Hoddesdon were to mount another comeback — something they had made a habit of — the next goal would be crucial.

But it went the wrong way.

On 58 minutes, Cannons Wood effectively killed the contest. Following a slick passage of play, Mahmondi picked up the ball and produced a moment of individual quality, weaving his way through before finishing superbly to make it 3–0. It was a dagger to Hoddesdon’s hopes. Changes followed almost immediately, with Jack Riddle, Harrison Cage, and Connor Brown all introduced in a bid to inject fresh energy. Earlier in the game, Emarie Smith had replaced Hadley Richards after 20 minutes, and later Connor Casey would come on for Jonah Evans. The intent was clear — shake things up, find a spark, and salvage something from the evening.

NUGENT DENIES… THEN DISASTER STRIKES

Despite the scoreline, Hoddesdon continued to push. And they were nearly undone again on 75 minutes, only for Liam Nugent to produce a superb save to deny Cannons Wood a fourth. It was a moment that briefly kept the door ajar, a reminder that pride and perseverance still mattered. But moments later, that door was slammed shut. A misplaced back pass proved costly. Adejokun pounced, showing sharp awareness to intercept, round Nugent, and calmly roll the ball into an empty net. 4–0 and the game was over.

FRUSTRATION FOR HODDY

There was no lack of effort from Hoddesdon in the closing stages. Players continued to press, to chase, to probe. But it simply wasn’t their night. Final balls went astray. Shots were blocked. Passes just missed their target. It was one of those evenings where, no matter how hard they tried, the breakthrough never came. The final whistle confirmed a heavy defeat — a stark contrast to the recent run of results that had lifted spirits around Lowfield.

EDEN SHINES IN DEFEAT

Amid the disappointment, one player stood out. Bailey Eden was deservedly named Man of the Match, his performance characterised by relentless industry, composure on the ball, and a willingness to drive the team forward even when the game seemed out of reach. It was a display that embodied the fighting spirit Hoddesdon have shown in recent weeks — even if the result didn’t follow.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Defeats happen. Heavy ones sting. But they also serve as reminders — of standards, of focus, and of the fine margins that define football at this level. Hoddesdon’s recent late victories had perhaps masked the importance of starting games strongly. On this occasion, Cannons Wood did exactly that — and Hoddy paid the price. There will be lessons to take. The defensive organisation from set pieces will be scrutinised. The response to early setbacks will be analysed. And the need to convert possession into clear-cut chances will undoubtedly be a key focus in the coming days.

LOOKING AHEAD

The beauty of football is that redemption is never far away. Hoddesdon will have the opportunity to respond immediately, to put this result behind them and get back to the form that had seen them climb the table in recent weeks, with a home game against struggling FC Romania on Tuesday. And if there’s one thing this side has shown, it’s character. Three late wins on the bounce don’t happen by accident. There is resilience in this group. There is belief. And there is quality. Friday night may have been a setback — but it’s one that can fuel the next response. Because if recent weeks have taught us anything, it’s this:

Never write off Hoddesdon Town.
