Orchard Pips Bolton As Hoddy Bear Fruit

BOLTON BRACE AVENGES HAMMERING AS HODDY HOLD NERVE AT LOWFIELD
Hoddesdon Town 2–1 AS London | Eastern Counties Division One South | Lowfield

Under the Lowfield lights on a crisp evening in EN11, Hoddesdon Town produced a performance full of attacking flair, missed chances, nervy moments and ultimately sweet revenge, as a Connor Bolton brace secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over AS London — a result that wipes away the painful memory of the 4-0 defeat suffered earlier in the season. But it was Jack Orchard who took the performance of the night award for a steady showing at home

It should have been comfortable and it should have been done by half-time. Instead, it turned into one of those nights where the hosts threatened to run away with it, nearly let it slip, and then had to dig deep to get the job finished. In the end, though, three points stayed at Lowfield — and deservedly so.

FAST START, WARNING SHOTS AND MISSED CHANCES

Hoddesdon flew out of the traps and could have been out of sight inside the opening twenty minutes.

After just five minutes, Max Coltman fired a snap half-volley from close range that forced a sharp parry from the AS London goalkeeper, the ball spinning behind for a corner that was eventually cleared. It was the first warning sign for the visitors — and it wouldn’t be the last.

A minute later, Jonah Evans combined brilliantly with Connor Bolton, slicing open the AS London defence with quick passing that left the makeshift striker with a sight of goal. The keeper again came to the rescue, palming the effort away, and from the resulting corner Bolton rose highest but headed agonisingly over the bar.

Lowfield could barely believe it. It could already have been three.

The pressure kept coming. On nine minutes, Blue Gallagher danced down the right wing with a piece of wing play full of twinkle-toed confidence before delivering a teasing ball across the face of goal. Bolton arrived at the far post but the cross flashed just beyond him. The visitors were rocking, their back line all over the place, and the next chance summed up the pattern of the opening quarter.

On fifteen minutes Gallagher again split the defence with a perfectly weighted pass that sent Bolton clean through one-on-one. Just as the striker looked certain to score, a desperate last-ditch sliding tackle robbed him at the final moment. It was superb defending — but Hoddesdon could easily have been four up already. Moments later Ollie Finch tried his luck from fully thirty yards, the effort dipping late but gathered safely by the goalkeeper, before Bolton found himself through yet again on seventeen minutes, rounding the keeper only to see his tight-angle effort hacked off the line.

“How is this still 0-0?” was the question echoing around Lowfield. And there was more frustration to come when Bolton was played in once again only for the assistant’s flag to cut celebrations short.

INJURY BREAK, YELLOW CARD AND FINALLY THE BREAKTHROUGH

The game paused briefly on twenty minutes when the AS London goalkeeper went down injured, both sides taking the chance for a quick drink and tactical reset. It did little to change the flow. AS London managed a rare attack shortly after, but the move was halted by an offside flag, and Hoddesdon were soon back on the front foot.

On 28 minutes Bolton surged forward again and was chopped down as he threatened to burst clear. Referee had little choice but to reach for the card, Louis Maffia going into the book. With another defender covering it stayed yellow, but the visitors were walking a tightrope.

The goal felt inevitable. And on 35 minutes, it finally arrived.

Gallagher again the architect, threading another clever ball through the middle, sending Bolton clear for what felt like the fifth time of the night. This time the striker kept his composure, dinking the ball over the advancing goalkeeper and into the empty net. Ironically, after missing easier chances all evening, it was arguably the hardest one he had faced that found the net.

1-0 Hoddesdon — and no less than they deserved.

The final ten minutes of the half were quieter, the game settling into a more even rhythm, but the hosts remained in control. At the break, the scoreline read just 1-0, but it could easily have been five.

SECOND HALF SHOCK AS VISITORS COME OUT FLYING

If the first half belonged to Hoddesdon, the second started with AS London firmly on top. Within five minutes of the restart, the visitors were suddenly dominating possession and territory, forcing Nugent into a smart save before blasting another chance over the bar from close range. For the first time all night, the hosts looked rattled. Jason Brown tried to steady things on 54 minutes, poking an effort goalwards with the outside of his boot, but the keeper saved comfortably. The game drifted into a scrappy midfield battle, and by the hour mark AS London were seeing more of the ball than they had at any point in the first half.

Hoddesdon needed something. Anything. And they got it in the most unexpected fashion.

BOLTON DOES IT AGAIN — AND THIS ONE IS PURE CLASS

On 66 minutes, a hopeful long ball sailed over the AS London defence. The visiting goalkeeper rushed out to clear but made a complete mess of it, his weak clearance dropping straight to Connor Bolton twenty-five yards from goal. Without hesitation, the striker looked up and produced a moment of pure nonchalance.

A delicate chip. High. Slow. Perfect. The ball floated over everyone and dropped into the empty net and in a flash it was 2-0 Hoddesdon. After all the chances earlier, it was a goal out of nowhere — but a goal of real quality. Straight after the goal, Hoddesdon made a double change, Jason Brown and Maximilian Coltman making way for Freddie Wilkinson and Bailey Eden as the hosts looked to close the game out.

SUBS, PRESSURE AND A NERVOUS FINISH

The game became more tactical after the second goal, Hoddesdon defending in numbers but still looking dangerous on the break. Wilkinson added energy, Eden brought fresh legs in midfield, and the hosts looked comfortable as the clock ticked down. Blue Gallagher made way for Jake Harvey on 83 minutes, before Blesson Asekolenga replaced Maurice Abana shortly after as Hoddesdon shuffled the pack to see the game out.

But football rarely allows a quiet ending.

On 88 minutes, AS London pulled one back. A powerful shot from distance forced Nugent into a strong save, but the ball squirmed loose and Sekou Traore had set up a tense finish after all of the Lilywhite's dominance.

2-1. Suddenly Lowfield was edgy. The visitors pushed forward, the hosts dropped deeper, and every clearance was cheered like a goal. With stoppage time approaching, Connor Bolton — the hero of the night — was replaced by Jack Riddle to help shore things up.

FULL TIME — JOB DONE, REVENGE TAKEN

After a few nervous final moments, the whistle finally blew and Hoddesdon had the three points they craved. A result that was deserved, even if the scoreline made it look closer than it should have been. The win cements Hoddesdon's 10th place position and keeps us in touch with an unlikely run at the playoffs.

On another night, Hoddesdon could have been out of sight by half-time. On another night, the late goal might have cost them. But this time, they got the job done. And perhaps most satisfying of all — the 4-0 defeat earlier in the season has now been well and truly avenged. Exactly what was needed.

Bolton rightly got the plaudits for his brace but it was new signing Jack Orchard who claimed the Level Head Man of the Match award for a solid defensive display at the back and keeping the visitors at bay with a calm head.

Saturday beckons and a home fixture to Rayleigh Town will prove another tough test and an indication of whether or not an assualt on the top 5 is actually feasible.
