BOROUGH TEST AWAITS AS HODDY HIT THE ROAD AGAIN
Hoddesdon Town travel to The Maurice Rebak Stadium tonight for a tough First Division South clash against Enfield Borough (7:45pm KO)
Hoddesdon Town are back on their travels this evening as they make the short midweek journey to North London to face Enfield Borough in the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League First Division South, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45pm at the Maurice Rebak Stadium, the home of Wingate & Finchley FC, where Borough are currently ground-sharing.
With the season entering its final stretch, every point matters, and tonight’s fixture presents another stern test for a Hoddesdon side looking to climb the table and finish the campaign strongly after a run of mixed but competitive performances in recent weeks.
CURRENT FORM – HODDY LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK
Last time out, Hoddesdon suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat away at Basildon Town, a result that halted what had been a promising run of form through February and early March. Prior to that setback, the Simon Riddle's men had recorded victories over Lymore Gardens, Southend Manor, AS London and Cannons Wood, as well as an impressive away win at Barkingside, showing that when at their best, they are more than capable of matching anyone in the division.
Recent results for Hoddesdon Town:
Those results underline the inconsistency that has frustrated the side at times this season, but also highlight the fact that Hoddesdon remain a dangerous opponent capable of beating anyone on their day. Currently sitting 11th in the First Division South table with 48 points from 33 matches, Town are well clear of trouble but still have plenty to play for, with a top-half finish firmly in their sights.
THE OPPOSITION – ENFIELD BOROUGH IN GOOD FORM
Tonight’s hosts Enfield Borough come into the game in encouraging form themselves and will be looking to make home advantage count. Borough currently sit 14th in the table with 36 points from 31 games, but that position doesn’t tell the full story, as they have been on a strong run of results over the past few weeks.
Recent results for Enfield Borough include:
That sequence shows a side that are difficult to beat and capable of scoring goals, having netted 16 times in their last six matches. Their ability to win tight games and stay competitive in high-scoring contests has made them one of the more unpredictable sides in the division, and Hoddesdon will know they will need to be at their best to come away with anything tonight.
GOAL THREAT – BOLTON LEADS THE WAY FOR HODDESDON
One of the big positives for Hoddesdon this season has been the goalscoring form of Connor Bolton, who continues to lead the line superbly. Bolton has 17 league goals from 25 appearances this season, making him one of the most dangerous forwards in the division and a constant threat to opposition defences. Connor Casey has also enjoyed an excellent campaign with 11 goals, while Bailey Eden, Blue Gallagher, Arnis Lala and Patryk Bozych have all chipped in with important contributions. With goals coming from across the side, Hoddesdon have shown that they are not reliant on one player alone, something that could prove crucial during the run-in.
BOROUGH DANGER MAN – KABUNGWE IN RED-HOT FORM
Enfield Borough also have a striker enjoying an outstanding season. Steven Kabungwe has scored 18 goals in just 19 appearances, an exceptional return that makes him one of the most prolific forwards in the league. Alejandro Cardenas has added six goals, while Shaun Govia-Jackson and Zain Lemoudni have also contributed, meaning Borough carry attacking threat from several areas. Stopping Kabungwe will be one of Hoddesdon’s biggest tasks tonight, and the defence will need to be alert from the first whistle.
THE TABLE – BOTH SIDES WITH POINTS TO PLAY FOR
With just a handful of games left in the campaign, the league table remains tight in the middle section. Hoddesdon sit 11th on 48 points, just two points behind Burnham Ramblers and within touching distance of the top half. Enfield Borough, currently 14th, will be desperate to close the gap and finish the season strongly, while also looking to improve their defensive record, having conceded more goals than many of the sides around them.
At the top, Hutton look set for the title, while the battle for play-off places remains fierce, but in the middle of the table there is still plenty to play for in terms of pride, position, and momentum heading into next season.
THE VENUE – THE MAURICE REBAK STADIUM
Tonight’s match will be played at the Maurice Rebak Stadium, home of Wingate & Finchley FC, where Enfield Borough are currently ground-sharing. The North London venue is one of the more modern grounds in the division and provides a good playing surface, something that should suit Hoddesdon’s style of football. Midweek games under the lights always bring a different atmosphere, and with both sides needing points, the stage is set for an entertaining encounter.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
Meetings between the two sides have often been competitive, and tonight is unlikely to be any different. Both teams like to play attacking football, and recent results for each side suggest goals could be on the cards again this evening. Hoddesdon will be hoping to show the same determination that has seen them pick up important away wins this season, while Borough will be confident given their recent scoring form.
When the sides met earlier this season under the floodlights at Lowfield, Hoddesdon Town edged a dramatic and hard-fought 2–1 victory in a game packed with chances, controversy, and late tension.
Enfield Borough started the stronger and could easily have taken the lead in the opening minutes, forcing an early save from Liam Nugent before missing a series of clear opportunities, including a header from close range that somehow went wide. The visitors’ wastefulness proved costly as Hoddesdon gradually settled into the game and began to take control.
The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Connor Casey finished from close range after excellent build-up play, with Jonah Evans producing a clever flick in the move that left the Borough defence flat-footed. Hoddesdon doubled their advantage before the interval when Patryk Bozych struck a superb free kick from distance that flew into the far corner to make it 2–0 at the break.
Enfield refused to fold and pulled a goal back in the second half through Will Martin, setting up a tense finale. Hoddesdon had chances to finish the game, with Max Coltman and Arnis Lala both going close, but Borough also threatened an equaliser as the match became stretched. Late drama followed when Hoddesdon appealed for a penalty in stoppage time, only for the referee to wave play on, before Coltman missed a final opportunity to seal the result moments later.
In the end, the Lilywhites held on to secure a ninth game unbeaten at the time, with captain Jack Gibbs earning Man of the Match for a commanding defensive performance that helped guide Hoddesdon through a chaotic and entertaining contest.
WHAT TOWN NEED TONIGHT
If Hoddesdon are to return to Lowfield with three points, a few key things will be required:
When Town play with intensity and confidence, they are capable of beating anyone in the league, and tonight provides another opportunity to prove that.
FINAL WORD
As the season moves towards its conclusion, every game becomes more important, and tonight’s trip to Enfield Borough is another chance for Hoddesdon Town to show their quality, character, and determination. With goals in the side, experience throughout the squad, and plenty still to play for, Hoddesdon will head to the Maurice Rebak Stadium full of belief that they can come away with a positive result.
Kick-off is at 7:45pm, and as always, your support makes the difference. The Maurice Rebak Stadium, home to Wingate & Finchley Football Club, is located at Summers Lane, Finchley, London, N12 0PD
See you there!
