Bolton Spares Blushes As Hoddesdon Fail To Manor-Facture Winner

Hoddesdon Town FC 1-1 Southend Manor FC: Stalemate at Lowfield in Gritty Encounter

A dreary afternoon at Lowfield saw Hoddesdon Town FC and Southend Manor FC battle to a hard-fought 1-1 draw, with Connor Bolton’s late first-half strike cancelling out Aaron Akoman-Ellikfa’s scrappy opener for the visitors. It was a game that started brightly for the hosts but soon turned into a bruising contest, with Southend Manor’s physicality a defining feature.

A sprinkling of rain greeted the players at kick-off, with the pitch soft underfoot after recent postponements. Thanks were due to Adrian ‘Animal’ Lee and Neil Morris for working around the clock and ensuring the surface was playable, but conditions remained heavy.

Hoddesdon set the early tempo, moving the ball well in midfield through Arnis Lala and Jimmy Agnew, who both put in some great through balls to the attack. Their first clear chance came in the 8th minute when top scorer Connor Bolton fired a powerful shot from just outside the box, clipping the right post and going wide. The home side looked the more composed outfit, while Southend Manor struggled to gain a foothold.

The visitors responded tentatively, their first real attempt arriving in the 10th minute with a wayward strike from distance, comfortably watched past the post by Liam Nugent. Hoddesdon, by contrast, looked lively, probing with intelligent passes from midfield and working the channels effectively.

However, football’s cruel nature reared its head in the 23rd minute as Southend Manor, against the run of play, took the lead. The ball fell kindly to Aaron Akoman-Ehikpa, who poked home despite Liam Nugent’s desperate attempt to smother the shot. It was a sucker punch for Hoddesdon, who had been dominant in the opening exchanges but were now behind.

The Lilywhites almost hit back immediately as Bolton latched onto a through ball and stabbed an effort past the onrushing keeper, only to be denied by the post for a second time. The linesman’s flag was raised for offside in any case. From there, the visitors grew in confidence, exploiting Hoddesdon’s defensive hesitation. A long punt forward in the 28th minute caused chaos at the back, allowing Ronnie Blake to shoot just over the bar. A warning sign for Hoddesdon, who were suddenly struggling to regain their rhythm. Hoddesdon’s midfield, so bright in the opening quarter, began to lose its cohesion, with misplaced passes allowing Southend Manor to press forward more frequently. It was clear that the shock of conceding had unsettled the hosts, and they needed to reset quickly.

The visitors’ strong-arm approach soon began to draw the ire of the referee. Lenny Asamoah went into the book for a reckless late challenge on Reece Barnett in the 36th minute, and just before half-time, Owen Reynolds was also cautioned for another heavy tackle—this time on Bolton.

As the clock ticked into added time, Hoddesdon finally found a breakthrough from a set piece—an area they had struggled with all afternoon. Blue Gallagher’s corner was poorly punched into the air by the Southend Manor goalkeeper, allowing Connor Bolton to nod home unchallenged at the back post for his 17th goal of the season. 1-1, and a much-needed boost for the home side heading into the break.

Second Half

The rain finally relented as the teams emerged for the second half, and Hoddesdon started on the front foot once more. Just a minute after the restart, Callum Bennison was presented with a glorious chance, one-on-one with the keeper, but he miscontrolled at the crucial moment and sliced across the ball as he tried to adjust his feet.. A huge let-off for Southend Manor and disappointment for the Lilywhites.

The visitors continued their robust approach, and in the 63rd minute, Ronnie Blake became the third Southend Manor player to go into the book for a cynical challenge. Soon after, Max Bellamy joined him, stopping a promising Hoddesdon break with a tactical foul on the halfway line.

Simon Riddle then opted for fresh legs, bringing on Jonah Evans for Ben Clarke in the 58th minute and introducing the returning Connor Casey for Bennison on 69 minutes. The changes injected some energy, but the game became increasingly scrappy, with both sides struggling to carve out clear openings. Jack Gibbs was controversially booked in the 74th minute for what looked like a well-timed challenge. The home supporters voiced their discontent, but the referee was firm in his decision. On balance, the referee had a very good game but this was arguably his one error of the afternoon, as it was clear to all in attendance that it was a tremendous tackle, firm yes, but not outside of the rules.

In the 76th minute, Hoddesdon had a strong penalty appeal waved away when the ball appeared to strike a Southend Manor defender’s hand inside the box as he struggled to control the delivery of a corner. The frustration grew, and moments later, the visitors nearly snatched a winner as a lofted effort clipped the top of the crossbar with Nugent beaten. Fortunately the ball bounced to safety.

The closing stages were frantic. Josh Howard, introduced in the 80th minute for Lala, made an immediate impact, linking well with Bolton. In the 82nd minute, he set up the winger, but Bolton’s tame effort was comfortably gathered by the Southend Manor keeper. As the clock ticked down, Reece Barnett went down injured and was forced to leave the pitch, while Jack Gibbs, pushing forward in search of a winner, overhit a cross in the 90th minute with the box loaded and hoping for a better delivery.

The final minutes saw end-to-end play, with both sides desperate for a decisive moment. Hoddesdon continued to press, earning a late free kick, but Gallagher’s delivery was unfortunately lacking. Southend Manor, too, had their moments on the break, but their finishing failed to trouble Nugent.

At full-time, both sides had to settle for a draw. Given the balance of play, a share of the spoils seemed a fair result, though Hoddesdon may rue not making more of their early dominance. Rustiness after a four-week layoff was evident at times, and while they will see it as two points dropped, securing a draw after going behind was a credible effort. Southend do appear to have a bit of a hoodoo over Hoddesdon in recent history, taking 10 points from 12 from Simon Riddle's team in the last 4 league games between the two sides, but we will have to wait until the next time the sides meet to see if we can prevent them from further becoming our 'bogey' side.

Blue Gallagher, making his return to the starting XI, was named Man of the Match for a tireless midfield display.

Hoddesdon now turn their attention to next Saturday’s trip to AS London, hoping to convert possession into three points as the season enters a crucial stage. The match may not have produced a winner, but it certainly delivered intensity, drama, and controversy. With Hoddesdon eager to push further up the table, they will need to find that cutting edge in the coming weeks to ensure that draws like these do not prove costly.
