Fresh from their recent 2-2 draw with May & Baker this past Friday evening, Hoddesdon will surely be in buoyant mood as they go on the hunt for three more precious points in the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties Division 1 South.
Wormley currently sit 7th in the table, having only tasted league defeat on two occasions so far this season. From their 16 games they have also won 9 and drawn 5 with a goal difference of +26. They have a number of games in hand over the teams above them, and if they won just 4 of them, they would comfortably sit top of the table, above current 1st placed side, Clapton Community.
It has been an impressive start to the campaign for Wormley and they could possibly pose a big threat to Hoddesdons recent turn of good form. Their home game on Saturday against Brimsdown was postponed due to bad weather so their last fixture was a thumping 5-1 away win to NW London. A George Beattie double set Rovers on their way and the 21 paying spectators in attendance cannot have helped but be impressed by the free flowing football. Manager Ryan Wade returned to the club recently after an ill fated jaunt to join the coaching staff at Ware, a role that only lasted 5 weeks and saw him return to the Playing Fields side to pick up where he left off. Wade is no stranger to Hoddesdon, or indeed non league football, having played for many local sides during his playing days, including the likes of Broxbourne Borough, Hertford Town, St Margaretsbury, Colney Heath and Cockfosters. A physical forward, Ryan has enjoyed goalscoring success against the Lilywhites on many occasions and will be hoping for more of the same in his managerial career. Wade notched over 100 goals in nearly 200 non league appearances and has a history of giving opposing defences a torrid time.
Indeed, George Beattie is perhaps the player Wade sees his old self in most, with the in form forward notching 9 goals in 9 appearances so far. Back in October he scored 4 goals in one game against Enfield Borough and Hoddesdons back line will have to be on their guard to stop a repeat performance. Mason Oakley and Michael Mignot also represent a threat going forward, with 9 goals between them. Oakley was on the score sheet back in late September when these two sides met at Lowfield in the FA Vase. Rovers ran out 2-0 winners on that occasion (Rovers subsequently lost the following round tie, 1-0 away to White Ensign) but were reduced to 10 men with Charles Hill receiving a second yellow card. A fine crowd of 155 witnessed that game and Hoddesdon will hope to give their fans a better account of themselves this time around.
At the other end of the pitch, our opponents have conceded 15 times, making them the second best defence in the league behind Benfleet, who have conceded just the 13 goals from 17 games. That said, Wormley only have two away wins so far this season and Hoddesdon will be looking to put another dent in their travelling form.
It was great to see Narcis Filip back amongst the goals on Friday evening, hitting the back of the net with a lovely free kick, to rescue a point for the Lilywhites against May & Baker. That goal took his tally for the season to three and the Lowfield faithful know full well that he is capable of much more on his day, with a man of the match performance serving as a stark reminder of his wonderful ability. Our first goal of the evening came courtesy of a third minute Harrison Cage strike, following a great through ball from new signing Dion Laughton. Laughton will be delighted to have provided an assist on his home debut and we also have to give credit to Cage, who is slowly becoming one of Hoddesdons "generals", putting in mature performances and helping to lead the side by example. Connor Bolton remains the clubs leading goalscorer this season with 6 goals in 13 appearances.
Kick Off is 7:45pm and the clubhouse bar and tea bar will be open, serving hot and cold refreshments.
