ORCHARD AND BOLTON SEND HODDY THROUGH

Hoddesdon Town’s remarkable start to the 2026/27 season gathered yet more momentum on Saturday as Simon Riddle’s unbeaten side produced a superb away performance to defeat higher-level Woodford Town 2–0 and book their place in the First Round Proper of the Isuzu FA Vase. Second-half goals from Jack Orchard and Connor Bolton settled a fiercely competitive tie at Ashton’s Stadium, while another outstanding collective defensive display ensured Liam Nugent returned home with a clean sheet.

For a club whose name is permanently woven into the history of this famous competition, progression carries a little extra meaning. Hoddesdon were the inaugural winners of the FA Vase back in 1975, defeating Epsom & Ewell at Wembley Stadium, and more than half a century later another Hoddesdon side has taken the next step on what everyone hopes can become a memorable cup adventure. There was plenty to admire about the manner of Saturday’s victory, too. Woodford compete one level above Hoddesdon in the football pyramid, but the visitors never looked overawed by the challenge and instead matched their hosts physically before gradually imposing themselves on the contest.

HODDY REFUSE TO BE INTIMIDATED

Hoddesdon arrived in Woodford brimming with confidence following their sensational opening to the campaign, with Town sitting proudly at the top of the Thurlow Nunn First Division South and still unbeaten. Their midweek 4–1 demolition of Enfield Borough had underlined their attacking threat, but Saturday required a different type of performance against opponents accustomed to playing Premier Division football. The opening exchanges reflected that challenge, with neither side able to establish complete control during an energetic first 15 minutes. Club President Roger Merton, whose invaluable handwritten match notes have once again helped us piece together the afternoon’s action, described those early stages as “end to end”, with both teams attempting to establish themselves without giving anything cheaply away.

Woodford entered the tie with plenty of confidence of their own and had produced some strong results during the opening weeks of the campaign. Hoddesdon, however, defended with the discipline that has become such a feature of this team, captain Jack Gibbs marshalling a back line containing Blesson Asekolenga and Jack Orchard while Nugent again provided assurance behind them. At the opposite end, Town slowly began to ask more questions. Blue Gallagher, whose endless running and industry would eventually earn him the Man of the Match award, was increasingly influential through midfield and provided one of Hoddesdon’s first significant moments when his dangerous corner around the half-hour mark caused problems inside the Woodford area.

CHANCES BEGIN TO COME

The visitors were now beginning to find openings, although the final touch stubbornly refused to arrive. Freddie Wilkinson made his way into the Woodford penalty area on 33 minutes but was unable to manufacture the finish, while Maurice Abana and Gallagher continued to provide energy in the middle of the pitch. Woodford remained a threat when opportunities arose and came close shortly before the interval. An attack down the left produced a headed opportunity which drifted wide, serving as another reminder that this cup tie remained finely balanced despite Hoddesdon’s increasingly confident football. That left the scores locked at 0–0 at half-time, but there was little sense that the visitors were simply hanging on against higher-ranked opposition. Hoddesdon had competed in every department, kept their shape and carried enough attacking menace to suggest that the breakthrough could come if they continued to show patience.

Manager Simon Riddle was delighted with the maturity his players showed during that opening period. “We knew we were coming to a good side who play a level above us, so we needed to respect that without showing them too much respect,” said Riddle. “I thought we grew into the game really well, competed for everything and started to look increasingly dangerous as the half went on.”

ORCHARD PICKS HIS MOMENT

Five minutes after the restart came the breakthrough Hoddesdon had been searching for, and it arrived from a set-piece delivered by the outstanding Gallagher. His free-kick was sent towards the far post and Orchard attacked it superbly, meeting the delivery with a header that beat the goalkeeper and gave Town a priceless 1–0 advantage. It was his first goal of the season and could hardly have arrived on a better stage. Orchard’s contribution at the other end had already been important, but this time he demonstrated his value inside the opposition penalty area as Hoddesdon suddenly found themselves with one foot in the next round.

“I saw Blue shape to put it into that area and knew I had to attack it,” Orchard said afterwards. “It was a brilliant delivery and thankfully I got a good connection on it, but the most important thing was getting ourselves in front because we knew how tough the game was going to be.”

Orchard was equally pleased by what happened after the goal, with the Hoddesdon defence refusing to surrender its advantage. “Scoring is always nice, especially in the FA Vase, but the clean sheet probably means just as much,” he added. “Everyone worked for each other and when Woodford had their moments we defended them together.”

WOODFORD HIT BACK

The hosts were never likely to disappear quietly and attempted to produce an immediate response. Hoddesdon had to absorb a spell of pressure after going ahead, with Woodford testing the visitors from the flanks before coming desperately close to restoring parity midway through the second half. A promising Woodford move culminated in an effort striking the post around the 65-minute mark, the nearest the ESL Premier Division side would come to finding a way past Nugent. It was a warning for Hoddesdon, but crucially there was no panic afterwards and the visitors immediately settled themselves again.

The Viking Kept Another Clean Sheet

Riddle also began to use his bench, with Jake Harvey replacing Jonah Evans before Harrison Cage entered the action in place of Ollie Babbage. Reggie Pegrum would later replace Jimmy Agnew and Ollie Finch came on for Abana, fresh legs becoming increasingly important as Woodford attempted to raise the tempo in search of an equaliser. For all the hosts’ efforts, Hoddesdon remained dangerous whenever space appeared at the other end. Gallagher continued to cover enormous ground, Wilkinson worked tirelessly through the middle and Connor Bolton waited patiently for the chance that eventually arrived.

BOLTON DOES IT AGAIN

The decisive second goal came in the 74th minute following another purposeful Hoddesdon attack. The ball eventually dropped for Bolton and, as he has done repeatedly during this extraordinary opening to the season, Town’s leading marksman showed the composure required to convert and make it 2–0. Bolton’s finish effectively transformed the closing stages. Woodford suddenly needed two goals against a Hoddesdon defence that had conceded precious little all afternoon, while Town could now manage the contest with the confidence of a side increasingly accustomed to protecting winning positions. It was another significant contribution from a player enjoying a tremendous start to the campaign. Bolton had already scored five league goals before Saturday and his Vase strike further underlined the attacking threat he has provided throughout the opening weeks.

Bolton Put The Icing On The Cake

Gallagher almost helped create further damage late on, bursting forward into the Woodford penalty area before being brought down as his relentless running continued right through the closing stages. Hadley Richards replaced Bolton in stoppage time as Hoddesdon calmly negotiated the final moments and waited for confirmation of another exceptional result.

BLUE IS THE COLOUR

When the final whistle sounded, it confirmed a 2–0 victory, a clean sheet and progression at the expense of opposition from the level above. Roger’s final notes summed up the performance perfectly as one of energy and commitment throughout, with Gallagher named Man of the Match for his extraordinary industry in the heart of proceedings. The midfielder may not have appeared on the scoresheet, but his fingerprints were everywhere. Gallagher delivered the free-kick for Orchard’s opener, drove Town forward repeatedly and typified the relentless attitude which has become one of the hallmarks of Riddle’s team.

“Blue was outstanding and deserved the Man of the Match award,” said Riddle. “His work-rate was phenomenal, but there were performances all over the pitch that deserve huge credit because beating a side from the level above away from home takes a complete team effort.”

The manager was equally pleased by the wider significance of the afternoon. “We’re unbeaten, we’re top of our league and now we’re through in the Vase, but the biggest thing for me is the mentality of the group,” he continued. “Everybody is working for each other and even when we make changes the players coming on are giving us exactly the same energy.”

UNBEATEN RUN ROLLS ON

The statistics now make remarkable reading. Hoddesdon remain unbeaten in competitive football this season, having won five and drawn one of their opening six league matches, while their League Challenge Cup tie against Hertford Heath was abandoned at 1–1 and will be replayed later this month. Across league and cup competition the transformation from the early months of last season has been dramatic. Riddle and his management team have created a side playing with belief, structure and genuine depth, while the players deserve enormous praise for maintaining their standards through a relentless opening schedule.

Saturday arguably offered another important indication of how far this squad has already travelled. Hoddesdon were not simply capable of beating opposition from the division above; they travelled to Woodford, controlled long periods, scored twice, kept a clean sheet and fully merited their place in the next round.

HEYBRIDGE AWAITS

That next challenge was revealed when the First Round Proper draw was made on Monday, and Hoddesdon have been handed another away assignment. Town will travel to Heybridge Swifts, with First Round ties scheduled for Saturday 10 October, and victory there would earn the club £825 from the FA Vase prize fund. It promises to be another fascinating chapter in Hoddesdon’s relationship with a competition that occupies such a special place in the club’s history. The road to Wembley remains extraordinarily long, but for the first winners of the FA Vase, simply being able to dream again feels rather appropriate.

Heybridge Swifts Will Host Hoddesdon In October

Riddle certainly understands what the competition means around Lowfield. “Everyone connected with Hoddesdon knows the history of 1975 and we’re proud of that, but this group has to create its own memories,” he said. “Heybridge will be another difficult away tie, but we’ve earned the right to go there, enjoy the occasion and give absolutely everything to try and get through again.”

For now, however, Saturday belongs to Orchard, Bolton, Gallagher and an entire Hoddesdon squad which continues to exceed expectations. Top of the league, unbeaten in all competitions and now into the First Round Proper of the FA Vase, the Lilywhites are roaring louder with every passing week.
