There are performances that catch the eye, and then there are performances that quietly control the rhythm of a game — dictating tempo, creating chances, and refusing to let standards drop. On a blustery Non-League Day at Lowfield, Bailey Eden delivered exactly that.
In a contest that was far from a classic, with swirling winds and two stubborn defences cancelling each other out for long periods, Eden stood tall as Hoddesdon Town’s most consistent attacking threat — and was a deserved recipient of the Greene King ‘Level Head’ Man of the Match award following the Lilywhite's dramatic 1-0 victory over Coggeshall Town.
After the full-time whistle — and after Freddie Wilkinson’s stoppage-time winner had sent Lowfield into raptures — attentions turned to the clubhouse, where Eden was presented with his award: a case of Level Head IPA, generously provided by Hoddesdon Town’s valued sponsors, Greene King Brewery.
Eden was pictured receiving the award alongside club chairman Stuart Varney and Coggeshall Town Supporters Club chairman Kevin Christmas, in a fitting moment of shared respect between two clubs who had just battled it out on the pitch.
A PERFORMANCE FULL OF PURPOSE
From the first whistle, Eden looked sharp. Operating with intent down the flank, he consistently looked to stretch the Coggeshall defence, delivering a series of dangerous balls into the box that on another day could easily have resulted in multiple assists. One early cross flashed across the face of goal with no one able to apply the finishing touch, while in the second half his delivery from the left picked out Freddie Wilkinson, whose header drifted over the bar.
But Eden’s impact went beyond just moments in the final third.
He worked tirelessly out of possession, tracking back when required, pressing intelligently, and ensuring Hoddesdon maintained their shape during a game that was often disrupted by the conditions. With the wind playing havoc and quality at a premium, Eden’s composure and decision-making stood out.
Even as the game wore on and frustration crept in — particularly after a series of missed chances and near misses, including Blue Gallagher striking the post — Eden continued to demand the ball and drive his side forward.
And when Hoddesdon finally broke through in the 97th minute, it felt like the reward for sustained pressure that players like Eden had helped to build.
RECOGNISED BY THE CLUB
The Man of the Match award, sponsored by Greene King, was selected by Barbara Abbott in memory of her late husband Barry — a meaningful touch that added extra significance to the presentation.
Speaking after the game, chairman Stuart Varney was full of praise for Eden’s contribution:
“Bailey was outstanding today. In a game where conditions made it difficult to play flowing football, he showed real quality, energy and consistency from start to finish. He was always looking to make things happen, and he never stopped working for the team.
Performances like that often go under the radar when there’s a late winner, but those who watched the game closely will know just how important he was to us getting the result.”
A FITTING END TO A SPECIAL DAY
The presentation capped off what had already been a hugely successful afternoon at Lowfield. With Non-League Day bringing a strong crowd through the gates, a fantastic atmosphere in the clubhouse, and the added bonus of a keg of Level Head IPA shared between supporters, the occasion had all the ingredients of a memorable day — and Eden’s performance was right at the heart of it.
The Greene King ‘Level Head’ award continues to highlight standout individual displays week after week, and the club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Greene King Brewery for their ongoing support, both through the sponsorship of the award and their wider backing of events such as Non-League Day.
WELL DESERVED
For Bailey, this was recognition of a performance built on effort, intelligence, and quality — the kind of display that helps win tight games, even if the decisive moment comes from elsewhere. On a day when Hoddesdon Town celebrated everything that makes non-league football special, Eden embodied those values perfectly.
Hard work. Commitment. Quality. And a well-earned case of Level Head IPA to show for it.
