The 2026/27 Premier League season begins on Friday 21 August, so there isn’t much time left to finalise those Gameweek 1 squads. With a £100 million budget, 15 places to fill and unlimited transfers available before the opening deadline, now is the time to experiment with different combinations before committing to your first starting XI.

Of course, the biggest question is where to spend the money.

Do you build everything around Erling Haaland and accept that the rest of the squad might require some serious bargain hunting? Do you load up in midfield, spread the cash around several premium players or sacrifice one superstar in the hope that two or three cheaper options can outscore him?

Then there are the midfield dilemmas. Bruno Fernandes, Cole Palmer and the other premium picks will all demand a sizeable chunk of the budget, while every seasoned FPL manager knows that finding the right mid-priced player before everyone else piles in can make an enormous difference.

Perhaps you’ll look towards Arsenal for defensive points, back Jordan Pickford between the sticks or hunt through the promoted clubs in search of this season’s surprise package. Every year somebody begins the campaign at a bargain price before suddenly becoming almost impossible to leave out.

And that is before you even start worrying about formation.

Is 3-5-2 the way to squeeze maximum value from midfield? Does 3-4-3 offer greater attacking potential? Or will you spend hours constructing the perfect squad only to leave your highest-scoring player sitting third on the bench in Gameweek 1?

Then comes perhaps the most important FPL decision of all: who gets the captain’s armband?

There are few better feelings than watching your captain score twice on a Saturday afternoon. There are also few worse than watching your carefully selected differential blank, get booked and disappear after 59 minutes while the obvious captain choice scores a hat-trick. That mixture of triumph, frustration, luck and questionable decision-making is exactly why millions of us come back to Fantasy Premier League every season.

The Hoddesdon Town FC competition adds another layer to it all. Every Gameweek brings another opportunity to climb above your mates, remind everybody of your managerial genius or quietly avoid mentioning FPL altogether after a particularly disastrous weekend. And with cash prizes on offer at the end of the season, there is something rather more tangible than pride at stake.

So whether you fancy yourself as Lowfield’s answer to Pep Guardiola, think you’ve spotted the next great FPL bargain or simply want another excuse to spend your weekends obsessing over Premier League team sheets, get involved in the 2026/27 Hoddesdon Town Football Club Fantasy Premier League.

Good luck – may your transfers pay off, your bench boosts land at exactly the right moment and, above all, may you never forget to confirm your captain before the deadline!
