Varney Leads The Way At Club Golf Day

'It was a fantastic day for the football club and exactly the sort of event we want to keep building...'
- Stuart Varney - Chairman

HODDESDON TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB GOLF DAY PROVES A SCORCHING SUCCESS AT ESSENDON

Hoddesdon Town Football Club swapped studs for spikes yesterday as supporters, committee members and guests gathered for a superb Golf Day at Essendon Country Club, with 22 players taking on the venue’s stunning New Course in conditions more suited to the Costa del Sol than the Hertfordshire countryside.

The day began in exactly the right fashion, with players arriving at Essendon for bacon rolls and coffee before the serious business got under way. There was a relaxed but competitive mood around the clubhouse as old friends caught up, groups were sorted, handicaps were questioned, and the usual bold claims were made about who was “striking it well” and who had “found something on the range.” As ever with golf days, most of that confidence was expected to disappear somewhere between the first tee and the nearest patch of rough.

With temperatures climbing into the mid-30s, it was clear from the start that this would be as much a test of stamina as it was of golfing ability. Sun cream, water and plenty of on-course refreshments were the order of the day, and the players deserve huge credit for getting round 18 holes in what were genuinely sweltering conditions. It was hot, sticky and demanding, but the atmosphere remained excellent throughout, with plenty of laughter, encouragement and the odd bit of ruthless sledging along the way.

Chairman Stuart Varney led proceedings in traditional fashion, taking the honour of the opening tee shot in front of a baying crowd who had gathered in hope more than expectation. Committee member Jon Dean was on filming duty, camera poised and ready to capture what many in attendance were secretly hoping would be a glorious shank into the long grass. Unfortunately for the spectators, Stuart spoiled the script completely by sending his drive long and straight down the fairway, much to the annoyance of Dean, who was left with disappointingly competent footage rather than the viral humiliation clip he had been hoping for.

Reflecting on the day, Chairman Stuart Varney said: “It was a fantastic day for the football club and exactly the sort of event we want to keep building. The support from everyone who came along was brilliant, the atmosphere was excellent, and Essendon looked after us superbly from start to finish. I was delighted to get the first shot away safely as well, especially with Jon filming and waiting for me to make a complete mess of it.

From there, the groups headed out onto the New Course, which was presented in superb condition despite the relentless heatwave of recent days. Essendon’s fairways looked excellent, the course layout provided a proper challenge, and the greens in particular were outstanding. In the middle of such a hot spell, to have the putting surfaces running so true and looking so well kept was hugely impressive, and it was a credit to everyone involved in maintaining the course.

The New Course At Essendon Was In Stunning Condition

The team competition produced a strong standard and plenty of friendly rivalry, with each group trying to keep themselves in contention while battling the heat and the occasional wayward swing. In the end, the winning team included committee member and groundsman Neil Morris, who helped guide his group to victory and earn a fantastic prize: a fourball voucher to return to Essendon Country Club and play another round on a day of their choosing. It was a fitting reward for a team who combined consistency, composure and just enough quality at the right moments to come out on top.

Morris was delighted with the win and praised both the event and the venue. He said: “It was a brilliant day and great to be part of the winning team. The conditions were tough because of the heat, but the course was in fantastic shape and everyone seemed to really enjoy it. As a club, days like this are really important because they bring people together away from football, and hopefully it is something we can continue to grow year after year.

There was also individual glory on offer, and it was Stephen Varney, son of chairman Stuart, who claimed the individual event after an excellent round. With the Varney name already taking centre stage on the first tee, Stephen made sure the family stayed firmly in the headlines by producing the best individual performance of the day. It was a fine effort in testing conditions, and he was a worthy winner of the main individual prize.

The nearest the pin competition came on the par-three 8th hole, and it produced one of the shots of the day from former Hoddesdon Town goalkeeper Ethan Gannon. Best known to many for his work between the sticks, Ethan showed he is more than capable with a club in hand as well, landing a superb tee shot to within 10 feet of the hole. It was a cracking effort under pressure and good enough to secure the nearest the pin prize.

The longest drive competition took place on the par-five 12th, where Gary Roberts stepped up and delivered the biggest hit of the day. In a field full of players trying to find that perfect combination of power and accuracy, Gary got hold of one properly and walked away with the longest drive honours. There were, inevitably, a few others claiming they had “left one out there” or “caught it a bit heavy,” but the prize went exactly where it belonged.

After the round, players returned to the clubhouse for a well-earned meal of ham, egg and chips, along with a few drinks and the prize presentation. After several hours in the heat, the food and refreshments were very welcome indeed, and the clubhouse provided the perfect setting to round off the day. Stories from the course were exchanged, good shots became great shots, bad shots were quietly forgotten, and the usual golfing exaggerations began to grow with every passing pint.

Richard Jaggs Claimed The Wooden Spoon For Worst Score Of The Day

Hoddesdon Town Football Club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Vera Muldoon and her team at Essendon Country Club for the excellent hospitality received throughout the day. From the breakfast on arrival to the post-round meal, the drinks, the on-course refreshments and the overall welcome, everything was first class. Events like this rely heavily on good organisation and support from the host venue, and Essendon delivered brilliantly from start to finish.

The club would also like to thank General Manager Paul Densham for accommodating the event and for helping provide a golf course in such superb condition. Given the extreme heat of recent days, the standard of the course was especially impressive, with the greens a real highlight. Those who played were full of praise for the venue, and there is no doubt that Hoddesdon Town Football Club would be delighted to return in the future.

Varney added: “On behalf of the club, I would like to thank Vera, Paul and of course our own Jon Dean, and everyone at Essendon Country Club for making us feel so welcome. The hospitality was excellent, the food was spot on, and the golf course was in superb condition. We are very grateful for their support, and we will certainly be looking to come back again.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who came along and supported the event. Whether committee member, supporter, guest, organiser or helper, every person involved helped make the day such an enjoyable success. It was a brilliant example of the club coming together away from the football pitch, building relationships, raising spirits and enjoying each other’s company in a fantastic setting.

On a sweltering summer’s day at Essendon Country Club, Hoddesdon Town Football Club’s Golf Day proved to be a terrific occasion from start to finish. There was good golf, questionable golf, plenty of laughs, excellent hospitality and a real sense of togetherness. The weather was roasting, the course was outstanding, and the company was even better.

All in all, it was a day the club can be very proud of, and one we very much hope to repeat.
