Jake Shuts The Door On Debut

'He’s another really promising player coming through in the full back position, and performances like that show exactly why we’re so excited about him...'
- Stuart Varney - Chairman

There are debuts… and then there are statements.

Under the lights at Lowfield, in a hard-fought 1-1 draw with FC Romania, Jake Harvey didn’t just make his first full appearance in a Hoddesdon Town shirt — he owned it. Calm, composed, and utterly assured at full back, Harvey’s performance earned him the Greene King ‘Level Head’ Man of the Match award, capping off a night that may well prove to be the beginning of something very special for both player and club.

A NIGHT OF CHARACTER

The evening itself had all the hallmarks of a proper non-league battle. FC Romania arrived organised, physical, and ready to test Hoddesdon — and for a period in the first half, they looked the sharper of the two sides.

On 20 minutes, the visitors struck first. A well-worked move carved open the Hoddesdon defence, and despite the best efforts of Liam Nugent between the sticks, the ball found its way into the net to give FC Romania a 1-0 lead.

It was a moment that could have unsettled a young Hoddesdon side. Instead, it sparked a response.

ABANA ANSWERS BACK

Just ten minutes later, Hoddesdon were level — and it was a goal that lifted both the players and the Lowfield crowd.

Mo Abana, always a lively presence in the final third, capitalised on a moment of opportunity to fire home the equaliser on 30 minutes. It was a goal born of persistence and sharp attacking instinct — exactly what was needed to shift the momentum back in Hoddesdon’s favour.

From that point on, the game settled into a competitive rhythm, with both sides probing for a winner but neither willing to give an inch. And at the heart of Hoddesdon’s resilience? One man making his mark.

HARVEY THE HERO

Making a full debut is never easy. Doing so in a tight, physical contest where every decision matters? Even harder. Jake Harvey, though, made it look effortless.

Positionally intelligent, strong in the tackle, and composed in possession, Harvey delivered a performance that belied his experience. Time and again, he snuffed out danger, tracked runners, and provided a reliable outlet down the flank.

What stood out most was his decision-making. No panic. No rash challenges. Just calm, controlled defending — the kind that managers and teammates love. And when called upon going forward, Harvey showed glimpses of attacking intent too, linking play neatly and offering width when Hoddesdon looked to stretch the game. It was, in every sense, a complete full back performance.

PRAISE FROM THE TOP

After the match, Chairman Stuart Varney was full of praise for the young defender — and his words reflected just how highly the club already regard him.

It was a faultless full debut from Jake,” said Varney. “He looked completely at home out there tonight. That’s not easy, especially in a game like this.

He’s another really promising player coming through in the full back position, and performances like that show exactly why we’re so excited about him.

High praise indeed — but thoroughly deserved.

LEVEL HEAD RECOGNITION

Following the final whistle, Harvey was presented with the Greene King ‘Level Head’ Man of the Match award in the clubhouse. The presentation, made in front of teammates, staff, and supporters, was a fitting end to a memorable evening for the young full back, who looked as comfortable collecting his prize as he had done on the pitch. The award continues to highlight standout individual performances across the season, and Harvey’s display will take some beating in the weeks to come.

BUILDING FROM THE BACK

For Hoddesdon, this was another step forward.

While the result itself — a 1-1 draw — may not have delivered all three points, the performance showed resilience, character, and, crucially, depth within the squad. The emergence of players like Harvey is a major positive as the season progresses. Strong, dependable options in defensive positions are the foundation of any successful side, and Hoddesdon look to be building exactly that.

If this was a glimpse of what Jake Harvey can bring to the side, then Hoddesdon supporters have every reason to be excited. A “faultless” debut. A Man of the Match performance. And the composure of a player well beyond his years. Not bad for a first full start. As the lights dimmed at Lowfield and the clubhouse buzzed with post-match conversation, one thing was clear: Hoddesdon may have drawn the game — but they may just have found a gem.

And if Harvey continues on this trajectory, it won’t be long before nights like this become the norm rather than the exception.
